William Stroud

November 6, 1925 — October 21, 2014

William A. Stroud, 88 of Cool Spring died peacefully of natural causes at his home surrounded by family on October 21, 2014. Born November 6, 1925 in Cool Spring, North Carolina to Norris Andrew and Leora Gunn Stroud, he graduated from Cool Spring School. William entered the U.S. Navy in 1944 and served as an anti-aircraft gunner, first on the Liberty Ship Willard R. Johnson and later on the cruiser USS Portsmouth. He was released from service in June of 1946, after attaining the rank of Seaman First Class. On November 1, 1947 he married Nellie Privette of Cool Spring and was a devoted husband of 67 years. William worked for the Southern Screw Company of Statesville as a supervisor and retired after 33 years of dedicated service. William will be remembered for his love of working long hours in his cherished yard, his love of fishing, his many woodworking projects as well as his joy in sharing with others stories of his time in the Navy. His love of aviation always had his eyes looking toward the sky. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother and will be missed by all. William is survived by his wife, Nellie Stroud; three children, Allen Stroud (Teresa), Wayne Stroud (Jane) and Teresa Cook (Michael); seven grandchildren, Angie Bass (Jamie), David Stroud (Ivy), Lorrie Warren (Brad), Carrie Reavis (David), Robert Colvert (Leslie), Doug Cook (Nikki), and Chris Stroud; and twelve great-grandchildren; one brother, Kenneth Stroud and one sister Martha Lee Cash. William was preceded in death by one great-grandchild, Austin Baker William was a member of Cool Spring Methodist Church. Graveside funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 24, 2014 at the Iredell Memorial Gardens Mausoleum with Rev. Kyle Goodman officiating. The family will visit with friends Friday from 1:00-2:00 p.m. prior to the service in the mausoleum. Pallbearers will be David Stroud, Doug Cook, Chris Stroud, Robert Colvert, Christopher Bass, Matthew Baker & Cody Bass. A very special thank you to Dr. Roger A. Hatharasinghe, MD, Dr. Naim E. Bouhussein, MD, Hospice of Iredell County and Sherrie's Home Care for their tremendous support of our family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Gordon Hospice House, 2347 Simonton Rd.
