Mrs. Mary Velma Smith, 81, formally of Statesville, passed away Saturday, December 13, 2014 at Levine and Dickson Hospice House of Huntersville. She had resided the last five years with her daughter and her family in Mint Hill, NC She was born on January 31, 1933 in Iredell County to the late Augustus Green and Fannie Lou York Goodwin. Miss Smith was of Southern Baptist Faith and a member of Union Chapel Baptist Church in Statesville. She was a loving mother and grandmother. She loved all the generations of her nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 58 years, Robert Glen Smith; two brothers, Body and Grady Goodwin; a sister, Hattie Campbell, and a twin sister, Selma Carroll; two sisters-in-law, Bondelia Goodwin Wooten and Imogene Goodwin; and a brother-in-law, Preston Campbell. She is survived by one daughter, Debbie Smith Robey and husband Phil; one grandson, Justin Robert Robey; a special young lady, Phyllicia Taylor who she loved as her granddaughter; and two sisters-in-laws, Helen Smith Shook of Statesville and Norma Smith Royal of Winston-Salem. Funeral services for Mrs. Smith will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, December 15, 2014 at Union Chapel Baptist Church in Statesville with Revs. William Wease, Bobby Henderson, and Dale Gryder officiating. Burial will follow in the Union Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Larry Goodwin, Keith Goodwin, Kenny Nicholson, Dwight Barnhardt, Chad Smith, and Natt Stevenson. The family will visit with friends at the church Fellowship Hall after the service. Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region, 1420 East Seventh Street, Charlotte, NC 28204 or Levine and Dickson Hospice House, 11900 Vanstory Drive, Huntersville, NC 28078. The family would like to thank Dr. Fred Marks and staff of Piedmont Health Care of Statesville for all the years of loving care. A thank you to Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region home care and a special Hospice Nurse, Emily. Also Levine and Dickson Hospice House in Huntersville to all the loving, caring Doctors, Nurses, and entire staff and to Rev. William and Lois Wease for all their love and support.
