Theodore Willing Hawkins

July 7, 1936 — July 24, 2018

Mr. Theodore Willing Hawkins, 82, of Statesville, entered into eternal rest Tuesday, July 24, 2018 at the Gordon Hospice House.

Mr. Hawkins was born July 7, 1936 in Glens Falls, NY, the son of the late Dr. Charles Hawkins and Herta Nagel Hawkins. He was a graduate of Glens Falls High School and Siena College in Loudonville, NY with a B.S. Degree. On August 31, 1958 he married Bunnie Bick Hawkins, who survives. His professional life was varied. He first worked for the NY State Health Department as a Bacteriologist. He experienced a great deal of success working in sales and was the president of his own corporation. An innovator in many fields he was especially effective in the area of reduction of waste in oil, first with motor oil and later in the bio-fuel movement. An accomplished violinist, he spent the last decade of his life providing musical therapy in Hospitals and in Nursing Homes throughout central and western North Carolina.

Ted was a member of Hebron Baptist Church, a servant of the Lord and a man of great faith who said that he just wanted to serve the Lord. He often remarked that the two most memorable weekends of his life were when he married Bunnie, and the weekend he made his pilgrimage in the Via De Cristo movement. Ted was a cast member in many music productions in Statesville, including being the actual "Fiddler" in Fiddler on the Roof, and with roles in The King and I, My Fair Lady, Hello Dolly, Peter Pan, Tea House of the August Moon and Brigadoon to name a few. He and his wife were members of the Cantamos Choir for 14 years, where at one time they were honored to sing in the Billy Graham Crusade in Charlotte. Ted was an active community volunteer, working with a number of organizations including Teen Challenge, Promise Keepers, Iredell County Rescue Squad, Here's Life, and Iredell Memorial Hospital.

In addition to his wife of nearly 60 years, he is survived by a daughter, Pamela Weiden (Conrad) of Chapel Hill, NC; three sons, Christopher C. Hawkins (Kimberly) of Ocean Isle, NC, T. Russell Hawkins of Statesville, Douglas J. Hawkins (Ashley) of Winston-Salem, NC; nine grandchildren, Adelaide Weiden of Wilmington, Catherine, Mathias and Conrad Weiden of Chapel Hill, Kirby and Carson Hawkins of Ocean Isle and Isaac Hawkins of Greensboro, and Lydia and Josiah Hawkins of Indian Trail, NC. He was preceded in death by a brother, Frederick Hawkins.

A celebration of life service will be held Saturday, August 11, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Hebron Baptist Church with Rev. Darren Johnson officiating. Burial will be held in the church columbarium. The family will visit with friends from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at the church.
