Sylvia Matthews

Sylvia Garwood Matthews, 75, of Granite Falls, N.C., formerly of Troutman, N.C., passed away Monday, April 25, 2011 at Catawba Valley Medical Center in Hickory, N.C. Ms. Matthews was born March 17, 1936 in High Point, N.C. and was the daughter of the late James Clarence "J.C." Garwood and Carrie Lee Miller Garwood. She attended Brawley School and graduated from Troutman High School. She was also a graduate of the Lowrance Hospital School of Nursing in Mooresville, N.C. and was a registered nurse. She was employed by the North Carolina Prison System as a head nurse until her retirement and was of the Baptist faith. Ms. Matthews is survived by one son, Jerry Mac Matthews, Jr. of Marion, N.C.; one brother, Ronald Garwood of Auton, VA.; granddaughter, Shannon Matthews and her caregiver for a number of years, Lisa Cook of Granite Falls, N.C. Funeral services will be conducted 3:00 PM Wednesday, April 27, 2011 in the Mausoleum at Iredell Memorial Gardens Cemetery with Dr. J.B. Parker, Jr. officiating. The family will assemble at Nicholson Funeral Home from 1:00 until 2:30 PM on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the church or charity of the donor's choice.
