Stephen Anthony Santorum passed away July 17, 2014, at age 56, in Asheboro, NC, where he had made his home for several years. Steve was born to the late Bruno and Louise Santorum in Statesville and grew up in the Central Community. He attended Central Elementary and graduated from North Iredell High School. He attended Mitchell College and UNC-Charlotte. Steve spent his career as a restaurant cook in various restaurants in Statesville and Iredell County, Charlotte and 10 years in the Austin, Texas area. Steve enjoyed people, telling stories and charming old ladies. He loved the live music in Austin and made time for blues or rock concerts wherever he lived. Steve had health problems from birth, more over the last 10 years. He had been seriously ill for 2 months, but had rallied this week and was talking about more physical therapy in order to go home. He was in a different kind of home the next day. Steve's parents and sister, Claudia Mason, are deceased. He is survived by his special friend, Cheryl Thompson and her family--parents, Linda and Al Rose, her children Heather Grant, Ashley Caviness, Brandon Thompson and grandchildren Ayden McGill and Makelah Thompson. He is also survived by his siblings Linda Byers, Richard Santorum (Mary) and Candy Gibson (Harry); nieces Ursula Mason, Elizabeth Smith (Paul), Sydney Turner, Wendy Santorum, Kalley Santorum, Kate Santorum and Darrean Morrison; and nephews Todd Mason, Andy Mason, Joey Santorum, Ronnie Morrison, Bradley Morrison, Alex Smith. Steve was a member of Grace Baptist Church, 719 Club Drive, Statesville. He was a long time volunteer employee at Fifth Street Ministries, 1400 5th Street, Statesville 28677. The family requests no flowers. Memorials may be made to Fifth Street Ministries or Grace Baptist Church. Memorial services for Steve Santorum will be held 7:00 PM, Sunday, July 20, 2014 at Grace Baptist Church with Rev. Gary West officiating. The family will visit with friends prior to the service from 6:00 until 7:00 PM at the church.
