Sr. John Weaver

John Flake Weaver, Senior, age 83, passed away on Monday morning, May 6, 2013 at Jurney's of Statesville. He was in declining health for several years and seriously ill for the past month. He died of complications of his dementia. He was born on February 16, 1930 in Statesville, NC. He is survived by his wife, the former Mary Anne Jenkins. His father was Gilbert Earl Weaver, Senior and his mother was Maude McHargue Weaver of Statesville. He is also survived by his sons, John F. Weaver, Jr., of Alpharetta, GA, Andrew E. Weaver (Ellen) of Emporia, VA, F. Wade (Michelle) Weaver of McLean, VA, and his daughter, M. Caroline Weaver (Tony Reevy) of Durham, NC. He is survived by his grandchildren: Katie Weaver, Lindley Reevy, Ian Reevy, Corinne Weaver, Josh Weaver, Madeline Weaver, Christopher Weaver, Nicholas Weaver, and Elizabeth Weaver. In addition to his immediate family, he is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. He studied at UNC-Chapel Hill, St. Mary's University, and received his law degree from American University in Washington, D.C. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force and studied Russian at the Monterrey Language School in California. He then served overseas in Turkey where he translated Russian broadcasts and served in military intelligence. He and Mary Anne raised their family in McLean, VA and John worked in Washington, D.C. at the National Archives, the Justice Department, and ended his government career as a director and attorney at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. He retired from government service to private practice as a partner in a Virginia law firm and consulted after retiring to North Carolina. He was a gifted artist and photographer and talented at many things. He loved flying, sailing, fishing and the ocean. He was a member of MENSA. He had a beautiful voice and sang in choirs in McLean and Statesville. He was an elder in the Statesville First ARP Church. He served his church and family faithfully. He was loved by many and will be missed by all. The family would like to thank the staff of Jurney's, the nurses and staff of Hospice and Palliative Care of Iredell County, 2347 Simonton Road, Statesville, NC 28625 . In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Hospice and Palliative Care of Iredell County, 2347 Simonton Road, Statesville, NC 28625. A funeral service is planned for 10 a.m. on Friday, May 10, 2013 at the First ARP Church in Statesville, NC.
