Sr. Herman Speece

Herman Marshall Speece, Sr., 82, of Union Grove, NC accidentally died Friday, August 19, 2011 at his residence. Mr. Speece was born April 30, 1929 in Iredell County and was the son of the late William Marshall Speece and Treva McDaniels Speece. He was a graduate of Union Grove High School and served two tours in the U.S. Army in Germany and Korea and was awarded the Korean Service Medal with Bronze Service Star. On March 17, 1950, he was married to the late Dorothy Mae Brown Speece, who passed away June 20, 2007. He lovingly took care of Dorothy in their home for many years until her death from Alzheimer's. Herman was a devoted husband and loving father to his wife and children. His death leaves a void in each life he touched. He was a member of Union Grove United Methodist Church and had worked for the Iredell Vocational Workshop for over 20 years. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two sons, Stephen Speece and Leland Speece along with three sisters, Ruth Speece, Hazel Speece Wilson, and Wanda Speece Ireland. Mr. Speece is survived by two sons, Herman M. Speece, Jr. (Brenda) of Statesville, Timothy Speece (Yolanda) of Brownsville, TX, one daughter, Cindy S. Robbins (Mark) of Union Grove, four grandchildren, Jayne S. Goodenow, Herman Marshall Speece, III, Alix Elaine (Ali) Robbins, Nathaniel Noah (Nathan) Robbins, five great grandchildren, William Tate Speece, Jackson Malone Goodenow, Lilah Grace Goodenow, Colton Lee Speece and step-great-grandchild, Autumn Dye, one brother, Ralph Speece and two sisters, Ruby S. Buchannan and Virginia Speece. He has many family members, friends, and neighbors; too numerous to mention all, but each and everyone was treasured. He enjoyed visiting with family and friends. Many of them have furniture in their homes that he made, as his lifelong hobby was wood working. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 25, 2011 at Union Grove United Methodist Church with Rev. Steve Kirby officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at the Union Grove U.M.C. Fellowship Hall. Active pallbearers will be Timothy Speece, Dennis Sharpe, Shane Sharpe, David Campbell, William Speece, Jarrod White, Zeth Davidson and Herman Marshall Speece, III.
