Shirley Jean Shew

Mrs. Shirley Jean Houpe Shew, 82, of Statesville, passed away, Monday, November 12, 2018 at Autumn Care.



Mrs. Shew was born May 4, 1936 in Iredell County and was the daughter of the late Theodore Roosevelt Houpe and Ruby Sloan Houpe. She was a graduate of Harmony High School, class of 1954 and attended Mitchell College. On March 10, 1955, she married the late Richard Allen Shew, who died June 12, 1997. She was a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church, but in recent years had attended Rose Chapel UMC. Following high school, she played fast pitch softball and worked for P.S. West Construction Company. She later worked for Johnnie Tilley Pest Control as a bookkeeper and secretary. She loved going to the beach, working in the yard and gardening. In addition to her children, she loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren.



She is survived by a daughter, Denise S. Blackwelder (Kent) of Statesville, a son, Tim A. Shew (Kathryn Shoemaker) of Statesville, two granddaughters, Tia Shew (Cory Beije) of Hiddenite, Kara Blackwelder Trogdon (Chad) of Kernersville and three great grandchildren, Kayden Shew, Cory Beije and Carissa Beije. In addition to her husband and parents, Shirley was preceded in death by a son, Richard Edward Shew and a brother, John Houpe.



Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, November 16, 2018 at Rose Chapel United Methodist Church with Rev. Gary Camp and Rev. Sue Moore officiating. Burial will follow in the Bethany Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The family will visit with friends on Friday from 1:00-2:00 p.m. in the Rose Chapel UMC Fellowship Hall.
