Shelby Nelson

Shelby Jean Benge Nelson, 72, of Statesville, passed away Saturday, May 21, 2011, at her home. Ms. Nelson was born February 20, 1939 in Iredell County and was the daughter of the late Hubert Lee Benge and Dollie Grace Hartness. Ms. Nelson attended Iredell County and Yadkin County schools. She was a member of Statesville Full Gospel Tabernacle. In addition to her parents, Ms. Nelson was also preceded in death by one brother, Dwight Benge. Ms. Nelson is survived by two sons, Johnny Nelson (Rena) and Ricky Nelson (Mae), both of Statesville. She is also survived by four daughters, Rosalie Shaw (Richard) of Harmony, Joanna Everidge (Rocky), and Rebecca Massey (John), both of Statesville, and Janie Carnell (Phillip) of Troutman. She held a special place in her heart for her grandchildren, James Everidge, Brian Nelson, Lisa Bustle, Sara Moore, Shela Everidge, Kimberly Everidge, all of Statesville; Todd Massey of Troutman, Jason Nelson of Champlin, MN, and Dennis Shaw of Harmony, along with several other step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers, Donald Benge and Wayne Benge, both of Statesville, along with one sister, Nancy Lail of Taylorsville. She is further survived by her former husband, Garfield Nelson and her long time friend, James Mesiemore. She loved to crochet and spent as much time as she could with her special friends at Ruth's Craft Shop in Troutman. She was a special lady and will be missed by everyone who knew her. Funeral services for Ms. Nelson will be conducted 2:00 PM Tuesday, May 24, 2011 at Statesville Full Gospel Tabernacle with Rev. Robert Johnson and Rev. Max Hayes officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will visit with friends this evening from 6:30 until 8:30 PM at Nicholson Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Statesville Full Gospel Tabernacle, 135 Village Point Dr., Statesville, N.C. 28625 or to Hospice and Palliative Care of Iredell County, 2347 Simonton Road, Statesville, N.C. 28625.
