Sara Burr Green Fraley, 93, of Statesville passed away Wednesday, April 18, 2018 at The Gardens of Statesville. She was born on January 25, 1925 in Atlanta, GA to the late Sara Burr and Alfred Franklin Green.
Sara was a graduate of North Fulton High School in Atlanta, GA and Wesleyan College in Macon, GA. She met her husband James McAuley Fraley of Statesville when she was a bridesmaid of a college friend from Salisbury, NC. They married in 1950 and shared over 41 years of marriage before his passing in 1991. The "Georgia Peach" made her home in Statesville and was active in the community as well as raising her four children. Her volunteer work started early in life driving a jeep ambulance during WWII. She volunteered for the Red Cross, United Way, Salvation Army, Davis Hospital, and delivered meals for "Meals on Wheels." Her calligraphy skills were outstanding as she did work for the Rotary Club and addressed wedding announcements for many people in the community. In her younger years, she was a skilled Duplicate Bridge Player and played in many tournaments. Sara was an active member of Broad Street Methodist Church for decades and especially liked using her creative side to make gifts for shut-ins.
Sara was a unique individual with a sharp wit. The mold was broken with her passing. We are sad that she is gone but happy she is reunited with "Big Jim" and her loved ones in heaven.
Along with her husband, Jim, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Alfred and Henry Green of Atlanta, GA.
Left to cherish her memory are one daughter, Margaret Ann Fraley-Bolton (Bob) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; three sons, John A. Fraley (Adelaide Horton) of Lake Norman, J. Burr Fraley (Guylyn), and Alfred G. Fraley, both of Statesville; one grandson, Nicholas Bolton of Greenville, SC; one great grandson, Brooks Bolton; one sister, Ann Cross of Winter Park, Fl.; numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Saturday, April 21, 2018 at Broad Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Michael Gehring officiating. Following the service, the family will visit with friends at Risto's Place. A private family burial will be held at Oakwood Cemetery.
