D. Russell Chapman, Sr., 77, of Statesville passed away at his residence on Tuesday, August 13, 2013 after a long battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family. Russell was born in Iredell County on March 19, 1936 to the late Carl and Ester Salmon Chapman. He attended Iredell County Schools and was married to Colleen Branton Chapman who preceded him in death on April 1, 2013. He served his county honorably in the Navy. He was a mechanic his entire career and retired from J.W. Buress. Russell was a member of Calvary Community Church. He was a loving, generous man who taught everyone around him his wisdoms. He will truly be missed by his family and all who knew him.. Mr. Chapman is survived by two sons, Rusty Chapman (Cindy), of Statesville, and Brown Chapman (Marie), of Texas, a daughter, Julie Chapman (Anthony Baggarley), of Statesville. He is also survived three sisters, Ann Roberts (Herb), Doris Chapman, both of Statesville, and Virginia Fewell of Climax, Georgia along with one brother, Fred Chapman (Mary Sue) of Mt. Airy, NC., nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. A graveside funeral service with full military honors for Mr. Chapman will be conducted at 11:00 AM Thursday, August 15, 2013 in the Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Don Horton officiating. The family would like to express their appreciation to caregivers Kim, Joe, and Tammy of K & K Private Duty Homecare, Aunt Virginia Moore and the caregivers from Hospice for the special care they provided Russell. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Iredell County, 2347 Simonton Road, Statesville, NC 28625 and Calvary Community Church, 334 N.
