Roy Wellington Poovey

Mr. Roy Wellington Poovey, 85, of Statesville, died Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at Heritage Place, where he had been a patient for 5 years. Born in Catawba County on September 1, 1930, he was a son of the late Pinkney Eli Poovey and Myrtle Hunt Poovey. He was a member of New Sterling A.R.P. Church and enjoyed western square dancing, travel and camping. He was a retired upholsterer. He was a 1948 graduate of Hildebran High School and he was also a veteran. He was preceded in death by brothers: Bud, Paul and Sam Poovey and sisters: Willie Alice Bumgarner, Faye Brietzman, JoAnn Smith and Rose Lynn. On November 7, 1999, he married the former Cora Rumple who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Teresa P. Manaa (Louis) of Gaston, S.C., two grandsons, Kyle L. and Brandon R. Manaa, 4 step children: Catherine Murdock (Bruce) of Newton, Edgar L. Compton (Lori), Karen Goodman (Todd) and Kimberly Elliott (Mark) all of Statesville, step grandchildren: Krysta Bickel (B.J.), Hannah C. Moore (Justin), David Murdock, Kattie Compton (David Vasquez), Gary Goodman, Madison and Merritt, along with step great grandchildren: Graham Bickel, Emma, Jaxon and Jeremiah Moore. Also surviving are a brother, Wayne Poovey of Longview and two sisters, Doris Whitener of Hickory and Carol Crouch of Conover. Services celebrating Roy's life will be conducted at 3:00 P.M. Friday at New Sterling A.R.P. Church with Pastor Tim Watson and Dr. Earl Linderman officiating. The family will receive friends at the church for one hour prior to the service.
