Mrs. Reynolds was born September 1, 1912 in in the village of Oetz in Tirol, Austria, one of four children of Joseph Fillinger and Catherina Schmidt Fillinger, both American citizens. Her father returned to the United States in 1915 to secure a job and home for his young family. Because of the outbreak of WWI, Catherina and the children were unable to follow for several years. In the meantime, one of the children, a girl Frances, became ill and died. Mr. Fillinger did secure a position as a baker at Sea View Hospital in Staten Island, New York. After war-related delays, Catherina and her three remaining children, Joseph, John and Rose Mary were finally able to travel to Ellis Island, New York via steamship in 1920. Mrs. Reynolds grew up in Staten Island, NY, where she attended Blessed Sacrament Parish School. She was married in 1933 to the late Frank Robert Reynolds. Although Mrs. Reynolds had several interesting career experiences in New York, she spent most of her adult life as a wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker. She relocated from New York to Iredell County, NC in the 1970's. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1988, and by her son, Frank Reynolds, Jr., in 1995. As a widow, she lived at The Plaza on S. Meeting Street in Statesville for many years, where she celebrated several newsworthy birthdays and even announced her candidacy for President of the United States in 2008. During her long life, Mrs. Reynolds observed and experienced significant historical events and changes in how the world works. The constants for her were her love of family and of fun. Among those who will cherish her memory are her daughters, Mary Reynolds Thompson of Georgia and Rose (Schotte) McGlamery of Statesville, NC, as well as four grandchildren: Susan (and husband Mike) Davidson of Texas, Stuart (and wife Cathy) Schotte of NC, Jennifer Reynolds of FL and Douglas Schotte of NC.
