Roger Jackson Carter, 66, of Statesville, passed away Friday, February 8, 2013 at his home following a 20 month courageous fight with Pancreatic Cancer. Born February 19, 1946 in Nashville, NC; he was the son of the late Joseph Reb Carter and Lucille Hedgepeth Carter. He was a graduate of Red Oak High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the Vietnam War. He was a Purple Heart veteran and was awarded several medals for his service. Roger was employed by and retired from the State of North Carolina License Division as a District Supervisor following 30 years of service. He was later employed in Security with Dale Earnhardt, Inc for 10 years. Roger was proud to be an eagle scout and stayed active with members of his military unit. He was also a member of the Honda Gold Wings and enjoyed the extended travel with his wife, Sue, traveling all over the United States. He was a Babe Ruth Baseball Coach for a number of years with the 16-18 year olds and many of his players have kept in touch with and visited Roger during his illness. Roger was a people person and really enjoyed his friends. In 1974 he was married to Sue Millsaps Carter who survives. He is further survived by a brother, Don Carter and wife Delia of Abingdon, VA, two sisters, Lois Hensley and husband, Bill, Knightdale, NC and Linda Carter of Raleigh, a nephew, Bryan McSwain and wife, Emma of Llington, NC, a niece, Brittany Carter of Washington, DC and a nephew, Randall Carter of Abingdon, VA. Roger is also survived by Sue's children and grandchildren, whom he claimed as his own, Dale Fox and wife, Sara, their children, Katie, Emma and Gus Fox, Gill Fox and wife, Rhonda and their children, Jennifer, Christine and Amanda Fox all of Statesville. A visitation for family and friends will be on Tuesday evening, February 12 from 6:00-7:30. A service to celebrate Roger's life will follow in the Nicholson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Darren Johnson officiating. Military honors and burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday morning at the National Cemetery, Salisbury, NC. Active pallbearers will be Brian McSwain, Randall Carter, Terry Harwell, Ricky Guill, Angelo Folio, and Ronnie Wooten. Honorary pallbearers will be John Walker, Sid Simmons, David Benbow, Eddy Harpe and Milton Hancock. The family will have special seating available for the baseball players that Roger coached through the years. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Iredell County, 2347 Simonton Rd., Statesville, NC 28625 or to the Northview Church of Christ Building Fund, 2615 Amity Hill Rd., Statesville, NC 28677.
