Phyllis Houston

Mrs. Phyllis Barkley Houston, 74, of Statesville, passed away Thursday, October 10, 2013, at the Gordon Hospice House. Mrs. Houston was born in Randolph County, W.VA on April 4, 1939 and was the daughter of the late Fred Barkley and Barbara Powers Barkley Knox. She was a graduate of Randolph County schools and she was married to L.G. Houston, who survives. Mrs. Houston was a member of Bethesda Presbyterian Church and she worked in the food industry prior to her retirement. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Houston was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert, Donald, and Kenneth Barkley, three sisters, Jean Jackson, Helen Scott, and Kay Hutto, a daughter, Karen Shelton, granddaughter, Phyllis Anna Taylor and a grandson, Joseph Campbell. She is survived by her husband, L.G. Houston of Statesville, six daughters, Barbara Rosenbranz (Chris) of York, SC, Cheryl "Chickie" Rogerson of Olin, Lisa Wood (Richard), Nikki Bustle (Jimmy), both of Statesville, Mary Brooks (Gary) of Annandale, VA, and Donna Campbell and one son, Edward "Buddy" Taylor, Jr (Cynthia) of Statesville. She is also survived by one sister, Mary Hedenskog (Bob) of Norwood along with 16 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. A graveside funeral service for Mrs. Houston will be conducted Monday morning at 11:00 am in the Iredell Memorial Gardens Cemetery with Rev. William Wease officiating. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the Gordon Hospice House, 2341 Simonton Road, Statesville, NC 28625.
