Philip Mason Campbell

September 22, 1943 — June 23, 2016

Philip Mason Campbell, age 72, passed away onThursday, June 23, 2016 at the Gordon Hospice House in Statesville after a long period of declining health. He was born on September 22, 1943, in Baltimore, Maryland to Reece and Ethel (Mason) Campbell. He was a member of Rocky Hill Baptist Church and was saved as a young man, and is now enjoying perfect health in his Heavenly Home - Psalm 73:26 "My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever" He graduated from Central School in 1961, and attended Lees-McCrae College for one year. He then joined the United States Navy in 1962. He excelled in electronics, and so became a sonarman on the USS Fletcher. After he completed a four year Navy tour, he married, and worked for several major video and electronics companies in San Francisco and Atlanta. In the 1990's, he returned home to North Carolina. He worked as a salesman at T & S Cadillac/Oldsmobile for several years. After leaving the car business, he became employed at Lowes Home Improvement, working in the electrical department. This job allowed him to use his electrical knowledge while helping his customers, and make many friends in the process. He loved his dogs and raised a small cattle herd during his later years. Conversation was his hobby, and he enjoyed telling stories (and some tall tales) from his past travels. He is survived by his mother, Ethel Campbell, one brother, Larry Campbell, niece, Kara Steadman (Tommy), and two great-nephews, Stone and Cooper Steadman. He is also survived by three aunts, many cousins and friends. A private service will be held for immediate family at Damascus Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers or gifts of food, a simple note of condolence to his mother Ethel would be greatly appreciated. The family would also like to extend a sincere "thank you" to the caring staff of the Gordon Hospice House in Statesville. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.nicholsonfunerals.com and Nicholson Funeral Home is serving the family.
