Paul Campbell

James Paul Campbell - (Paul) died at the age of 96 on Saturday, July 23, 2011 in Wilmington, NC, where he had made his home for the past fifty plus years. He was born August 31, 1914 in Statesville to the late Ransom Asbury Campbell and Hattie Patterson Campbell. In 1979, he married Ollie Whitman Campbell, who preceded him in death He became part of her family of five grown children whom he dearly loved. He was also preceded in death by his brothers Kenneth and Terrel, his twin sisters Dorcas Nantz and Dorothy Beaver and his infant son, James William Campbell. Paul served his country during the early years of WWII in the shipyards in the Northeast, he was honored to join the US Navy on the USS Battleship Wisconsin as a radar man. In recent years, to his joy, he was promoted to Honorary Chief Petty Officer. In 2010 he was given his first jet plane ride, above the clouds, as a part of the Freedom Flight to Washington, DC's WWII Memorial to honor WWII veterans. Paul said, "It was so beautiful above the clouds. How could anyone deny there is a God?" May you feel the wind at your back, sailor. You and your love of family and friends will be missed. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, July 26 at Andrews Funeral Home on Market Street in Wilmington, NC at 11:00 AM. Family members will greet friends and family at 10:00 AM. A graveside service with military honors for burial will be held in Statesville, NC in Oakwood Cemetery at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, July 27, 2011 through Nicholson Funeral Home.
