Norma Jean Stamey

October 21, 1928 — April 10, 2015

Norma Jean Toomes Stamey, 86, of Statesville, passed away Friday, April 10, 2015 at her residence. She was born in Randleman, NC on October 21, 1928 to the late Thadius Alvin and Bertha Jane Vickrey Toomes. Mrs. Stamey was a graduate of Randleman High School and attended Guilford College. On December 20, 1947, she married Coy Lee "Bill" Stamey Jr. and they enjoyed over 60 years of marriage before his passing in 2008. She was retired from the Iredell County Health Department. She was a long-time member of Broad Street United Methodist Church and was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. Norma loved homemaking, particularly cooking and sewing. She and "Daddy Bill" loved spending time with their grandchildren and great grandchildren, especially keeping them at their home. The fellowship of life-long friends from Guilford College and Statesville was a blessing along with her good neighbors. She loved playing bridge with special groups and enjoyed the company of her sorority sisters. Along with her parents and husband, Bill, she was also preceded in death by a son Robert Lee "Bo" Stamey and a brother, George Toomes Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Jane Stamey Withers (Patrick) of Thomasville, NC; a son, William Franklin "Pete" Stamey (Joy) of Lake Norman; six grandchildren, Shane Withers, Erin Withers Leonard, Jeremy Withers, Victoria Stamey, Miles Stamey, and Will Stamey; seven great grandchildren, Stone, Dylan, Kaitlyn, Eli, Judah, Rivers, and Jovie; and two brothers T.A. and Carl Toomes of Randleman, NC. Funeral services for Mrs. Stamey will be held 1:00 PM Monday, April 20, 2015 at Broad Street United Methodist Church with William Franklin "Pete" Stamey and Patrick N. Withers officiating. The family will visit with friends following the service in the fellowship hall. Burial will be at 4:00 P.M. at Oakwood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Shane and Jeremy Withers along with Miles and Will Stamey and great grandsons, Stone and Dylan Simpler. Memorials may be made to the Caring Fellowship Fund at Broad Street UMC, 315 W. Broad Street, Statesville, NC 28677 or to Hospice and Palliative Care of Iredell, 2347 Simonton Road, Statesville, NC 28625.
