Mr. Hoyt Aaron Herbert

Mr. Hoyt Aaron Herbert, 87, of Statesville, went to be with his Lord on July 5, 2019 from Heritage Place of Statesville.

Hoyt was born May 16, 1932 in Ila, Georgia to the late Robert Sloan and Ada Irene Shirley Herbert. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers: William Guy Herbert, Olin Oneal Herbert, Wildon (Bill) Herbert, Odell Herbert, Morris Glenn Herbert and sisters: Ruby Irene Farmer, Eva Sue Isenhour and Mary Edna Deaton.

Those left to cherish his memories include three daughters, Debra Herbert, Karen Warricks (Steve), and Terrie Powell all of Statesville, and one son, Alan Herbert (Anita) of Banner Elk. Also surviving are five grandchildren: Julie Caviness (Trent), Jason Warricks (Lauren), Daniel Warricks (Brittany), Haylee and Addison Herbert along with four great grandchildren: Tyler Caviness, Brodie Warricks, Zander Warricks and Avery Warricks along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Hoyt was a Korean War veteran, serving in the United States Air Force from December 1951 to December of 1955. Raised in a family of musicians, he was an accomplished banjo picker and singer. He began playing the banjo at age 14 and cites the late, great banjo player Snuffy Jenkins as his inspiration. He toured with Charlie Monroe in the mid 50's and his band of 14 years, the "Lincoln County Partners" became well known to television audiences in the 1960's with weekly appearances on the Bill Hefner Show, "Country Style Roundup" which was broadcast over a Charlotte TV station for eight years. He was named North Carolina's Championship Banjo Player for two years in a row during the 60's and he recorded two records with the major country star Lefty Frizell on the Columbia Record Label in 1953.

Known as the "Voice Of Bluegrass", he was the host of a 3 hour Sunday evening bluegrass show on Statesville's WFMX 105.7 radio station for over 30 years. Born in Georgia and raised in Kannapolis, he spent most of his life in Statesville where he raised his family and went into the cabinet making business in 1971 while still performing for audiences with his new group "Strings Of Five"

Hoyt was a veteran, musician, TV regular, radio host and a successful cabinet maker. He lived a full life and we will miss him.

He was a member of South River Baptist Church in Statesville where funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 P.M. Sunday, July 14, 2019 with Dr. Chris Thompson officiating. The family will greet friends for one hour prior to the service at the church and burial will follow with full military rites presented by the American Legion Post # 113 of Harmony, in the church cemetery.
