Moffett Knox

Moffett Preston Knox, 90, of Cool Springs, died Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2011 at home. Born March 2, 1921, he was the son of Lon Knox and Katherine Moore Knox. He graduated from Cool Springs School. A proud veteran of WWII, he fought in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. As a member of the 19 Combat Engineers, he won six bronze stars, once ambushing and capturing a German machine gun nest. After the war on June 30, 1945, he married Jacqueline Beatrice Propst, they had four children and lived in NC, VA, MD and Los Angeles, CA. For over 20 years he attended every army reunion traveling to Boston, Chicago and Pasadena, CA among other places. He saw all 48 lower states. He worked as an Auto Body repairman at Bell & Howard Chevrolet and also owned a restaurant in Covina, CA. He loved to garden, planting 500 blueberry plants, which he sold at the farmers market in Statesville. Mott was a lifelong member of Fifth Creek Presbyterian Church especially enjoying the fellowship at the weekday coffee group. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Graham, Elmer, Don and Bill and three sisters, Grace, Jamie and Elizabeth. He is survived by three sons, Kenneth, Michael and John, one daughter, Leslie and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Heather Hogan, Jason and Michelle Knox, Jessica Bouchard and David Knox and six great grandchildren. Graveside funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Sat. morning Sept. 10, 2011 at Fifth Creek Presbyterian Church with Rev. Judith Dellinger officiating. The family will visit with friends at the cemetery from 10:30-11:00 a.m. before the funeral hour. Military Honors will be provided by the Iredell County Veterans Burial Detail.
