Melvin Carroll Hinson, 79, of Statesville, passed away unexpectedly at Lake Norman Regional Hospital on Wednesday, March 22, 2017. He was born April 18, 1937 in Statesville to the late Ed Lee and Hazel Compton Hinson. Carroll graduated from Statesville Senior High School in 1955. He worked for J.C. Penney Warehouse a few years and then for Tom's Foods, Inc. until retirement. In retirement, he worked for Richie Brothers Auctioneers, It Happens To You, and Randy Marion. He served in the US Navy for four years; was an Ancient Free and Accepted Mason and was a longtime member of the Duck Creek Gun Club. Carroll was a lifelong member of Front Street Baptist Church and has served with the Baptist Mission of Men. He is survived by his wife, Sue Stilwell Hinson and daughters, Tammy Combs and husband, Wesley, Angie Prevette and husband, David, Wendy Harrington and son Tony Hinson and wife, Wendy. He is also survived by grandchildren, Artie Prevette and wife, Melissa, Casey Prevette and wife, Amanda, Ian Combs and fiance, Lauren, Jesse Payne and husband, Brandon and Gavin Combs. He is also survived by four great grandchildren, Oakleigh Payne, Knox Prevette, Nash Prevette and Dayson Payne. He is further survived by sister, Judy Harwell and husband, Bob Harwell, brother, Jerry Hinson and sister-in-law, Willa Hinson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Charles Hinson and Bob Hinson. Carroll was a sportsman. He pitched fast-pitched softball for Blackwelder Gulf and they won the 1971 state championship. He earned many trophies in softball, golf and bowling. He loved to hunt and he loved his hunting dogs. He was an avid gardener and had vegetables and grapes every year. He was a woodcutter and loved working with a chainsaw. He never met a stranger and was loved by everyone. He would help anyone who needed it. He was a wonderful man and he will be sorely missed! Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at Front Street Baptist Church with Rev. Tim Stutts officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. The family will visit with friends on Tuesday from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the church. Active pallbearers will be Carroll's grandsons and grandson-in-law. Honorary pallbearers will be members of his Sunday School Class and members of the Duck Creek Gun Club. Memorials may be made to Front Street Baptist Church, Saint Jude's Hospital for Children or any veteran charity.
