Mary Lucille "Lucy" Stroud, 88, of Statesville, a beloved member of her family and community, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2025, at the Gordon Hospice House, following a period of declining health. Born on January 9, 1937, in Union County, South Carolina, Mary lived a life filled with love, compassion, and dedication to those around her.
Mary had a rewarding career as a retail clerk with a food distributor, where she was known for her hard work and friendly demeanor. Her commitment to serving others extended beyond her career; she was an active member of South River Baptist Church, where she found great joy and fellowship.
Throughout her life, Mary nurtured many interests and hobbies that brought happiness to both herself and those fortunate enough to be part of her life. She enjoyed playing games, watching Wheel of Fortune, and engaging in arts and crafts. Additionally, she had a passion for cooking and bowling, and she cherished her collection of angels, each carrying its own special meaning.
However, Mary's greatest joy came from spending time with her family. She is survived by her two daughters, Kim Woods (Larry) and Joni Kimmer (Keith). She also leaves behind four step-daughters, JoAnne Stroud, Jill Apel, Tracy Levesque, and Amy Webber, and two step-sons, Mike Stroud and Frank Stroud. Additionally, she is survived by her sister, Willie Mae Bergstrom, five grandchildren, Andy Steele, Lacey Steele, Lauren Stone (Lucas), Allen Kimmer (Courtney), Victoria Kimmer, and six great-grandchildren, Grayson, Adalyn, Sawyer, Aeliana, Will, and Connor, who were blessed to know her love and care throughout their lives.
Mary is preceded in death by her father, Floyd Haney; her mother, Ethel Bledsoe Haney; two husbands, John R. Smith, Jr. and Charles "Chuck" Stroud; a sister, Wilma Wright; and her cherished dog, Benji.
