Marie Bell

Mrs. Addie Marie Mayes Bell, 94, of Statesville, passed away, July 10, 2011 at Statesville Place following an extended illness. Mrs. Bell was born June 22, 1917 in Iredell County and was the daughter of the late William Claude Mayes and Estelle Cornelius Mayes. She was a graduate of Cool Springs High School and on April 16, 1935, she was married to the late Woodrow Oscar Bell, who died Jan. 25, 1975. She was a member of Oakdale Baptist Church, where she was active in the church and missions. She served as President of the Women's Missionary Union at Oakdale and formerly at Diamond Hill Baptist Church. She enjoyed gardening, quilting, baking, decorating cakes, and art. She enjoyed raising flowers, especially roses and on numerous and special occasions shared them with churches, hospitals, family and friends. She had been a member of The Oakdale Club and the Wild Goose Patchwork Group. She had also been a Hospice Volunteer. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Burette, Elmer and Raymond Mayes and one sister, Gladys Walker. Mrs. Bell is survived by six children, Reba B. McNeely of Statesville, Charles E. Bell (Geneva) of Statesville, R. Von Bell (Pat) of Statesville, Dianne B. Gray of Signal Mountain, TN, Rex Bell (Judy) of Statesville, Keith Bell (Jeanne) of Waxsaw, NC, 15 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. She is further survived by two brothers, Glenn Mayes (Mabel) and Ross Mayes (Agnes) all of Statesville. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 14, 2011 at Oakdale Baptist Church with Rev. Greg Barefoot and Rev. David Knapp officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening 6:00-8:30 p.m. at Nicholson Funeral Home. Active pallbearers will be Lynn McNeely, Dean McNeely, Dale McNeely, Mark Bell, Timothy Bell and Stephen Mayes. Memorials may be made to Oakdale Baptist Church or to Hospice and Palliative Care of Iredell County.
