Margret Svoboda

Mrs. Margret May Svoboda, 75, passed away at the Gordon Hospice House on November 30, 2010, from a lengthy illness. She was born on September 30, 1935 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada to the late John and Swava Sveinsson May. Mrs. Svoboda graduated from Grayslake High School in Grayslake, Illinois and Temple University School of Nursing in Philadelphia, PA. She was a Registered Nurse for several years before dedicating her life to raising her daughters and volunteering for various charities. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Statesville for the past 37 years where she served as Circle Leader, and she was also a member of Statesville Chapter #214 Order of the Eastern Star. Margret enjoyed playing golf and was a member of the Ladies Golf Association at Statesville Country Club until her declining health prevented her from enjoying the outdoors. She was an avid reader and enjoyed needlework including needlepoint, sewing and cross-stitch. Surviving are her husband of 49 years, Frank J. Svoboda; daughters Marla Ann Svoboda of Evans, GA and Marcy Svoboda Doak and husband, Travis, of Charlotte, NC; sister Evlyn May Betar of Lincolnshire, IL; aunt Florence May of Lincolnshire, IL; and five grandchildren Bobby, Emma, and Walker Nelson of Evans, GA and Abby and Max Doak of Charlotte, NC. A memorial celebration of Mrs. Svoboda's life will be held Monday, December 6 at 2:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Statesville with the Revs. Steve Scott and Grant Sharp officiating. Visitation will immediately follow the service in the church Fellowship Hall. Interment will follow at a later date at Oakwood Cemetery in Statesville with the immediate family. Margret is remembered as a loving and compassionate wife, mother and Gammie. She was a friend who was quick to share a funny story and enjoy a good laugh. She will be deeply missed. The family wishes to thank the doctors and their teams at Davis Hospital and the gifted physicians, nurses and caregivers at The Gordon Hospice House for their care throughout Mrs. Svoboda's extended illness.
