Mae Colleen Bennett Brawley, 84, of Statesville, passed away on Tuesday, March 29, 2016, at Autumn Care of Statesville. Colleen was born in Statesville on May 14, 1931, to the late Arlie Flake Bennett and Lessie Mae Hedrick Bennett. She was married on July 2, 1949, to J.D. Brawley who preceded her in death on March 1, 2015. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Levan and a grandson, Byron Mason. Left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Sandy Mason (Randy) and Jaye Bennett (Brian) along with a sister, Sue Jarvis (Ralph) and a granddaughter, Maranda Bennett, all of Statesville and a grandson, Justin Bennett (Trinnet) of Kannapolis, NC. Colleen graduated from Statesville Senior High School in 1949. She worked for many years at Bernhardt Furniture, retiring in 1996 so she could travel for many years with the love of her life, J.D., in their fifth wheel camper seeing the U.S.A. They settled down at Kings Grant Court in Statesville, making many friends while there. She was a member of Landmark Church of God where for many years she taught and cared for preschoolers during Sunday school. She also could be found there many times helping her husband J.D. with his job of handy man of the church. The family would like to thank the staff of Autumn Care for the care they showed since last July. Also a special thanks to the Hospice nurses who gave Colleen very loving care the last few weeks of her life. Services celebrating the life of Colleen Brawley will be conducted at 2:00 PM Saturday, April 2, 2016, at the Landmark Church of God with Pastor Kenneth Hudson and Rev. Ben Black officiating. Burial will follow in the Iredell Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:30 until 8:00 PM at Nicholson Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Iredell County, 2347 Simonton Road, Statesville, NC 28625.
