Lula Alexander

Lula Whilden Atchison Alexander, 94, of Statesville passed away at Autumn Care on Monday, July 4, 2011 following a period of declining health. Born on December 29, 1916 in Cross Hill, Laurens County, SC, she was the daughter of the late William Scott and Annie Belle Denny Atchison. Following graduation as valedictorian from Cross Hill High School, Mrs. Alexander graduated Spencerian Business College in Charlotte, NC and worked for Allison Erwin Company. On April 8, 1945, she married William Boyd Alexander of Charlotte at First Baptist Church, Charlotte, NC. After living in Mooresville and Albemarle, the Alexander's moved to Statesville in 1960. Mrs. Alexander was an active member and volunteer at First Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Esther Bible Class. Since 1957, she was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. For several years she worked for Warlick Paint Co. and then in real estate with her husband at Alexander Reality. Mrs. Alexander is survived by a daughter, Anne A. Niblock McGehee and husband, Van P. of Clemmons, son, John W. Alexander of Avery County, five grandchildren, Brian Niblock and wife, Stephanie of Statesville, Laura Niblock Childress of Statesville, Emily A. Singleton and husband, Mike of Arden, NC, Michael R. Alexander of Morganton, Mark T. Alexander of Anchorage, Alaska; two great grandchildren, M.J. Childress and Bennett Singleton; two step-grandchildren, Barrett G. McGehee and Amy M. Yochis and three step-great grandchildren. In addition to her husband who predeceased her on Nov. 30, 2000, she was preceded in death by her parents as well as a sister, Sarah and brother, Denny Atchison, both having died in infancy. Visitation for Mrs. Alexander will be at Nicholson Funeral Home on Friday, July 8, 2011 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 9, 2011 at First Baptist Church with Dr. Jeff Porter officiating. Burial will be held on Saturday in Oakwood Cemetery at 10:00 a.m. Memorials may be made to First Baptist, 815 Davie Ave., Statesville, NC 28677-5310.
