Mr. Kelvin Glenn Johnston, 58, of Statesville, died on Thursday morning, March 25, at Gordon Hospice House in Statesville, NC. Mr. Johnston was born on May 7, 1955 in Statesville and was the second of four children born to Carl Johnston (deceased) and Lorene Cole Johnston, who survives. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Courtney Brooke Johnston, on December 9, 1999. He graduated from North Iredell High School in 1973 and attended Mitchell Community College. On November 30, 1974, he married Gigi Dyson Johnston, who survives. He worked for many years in the nuclear industry as a data analyst with Duke Power, Duke Engineering & Services, and most recently for Curtiss-Wright. He served on the board of directors for many years of New Life Pregnancy Center (now Pregnancy Resource Center). He was a West Iredell Ruritan. A longtime member of Western Avenue Baptist Church, he served in many ways, from being a Royal Ambassador leader for over 10 years along with his wife Gigi, to serving as a deacon, preschool security, to serving on mission trips, and most recently chaperoning a mission trip to Morehead City, NC last summer. His work involved much travel, which he loved. He and his wife, Gigi, loved rafting down the Nantahala and Ocoee Rivers and often enjoyed laughing as they remembered time on the river together. Mr. Johnston is survived by his wife, Gigi, a son, Christopher David Johnston (Julianna) of Sugar Grove, NC, and three grandchildren, Leah, Isaac, and Andrew. He is also survived by his mother, Lorene Cole Johnston, his brother, Zeb (Robin) Johnston, nephews Travis and Ryan; two sisters, Carol Johnston Shepard and Lisa Johnston Kimball (Eddie) and nieces Shelley Higgins Shepard (Justin) and grandnieces Hannah and Azariah. He is further survived by his brother-in-laws, Bob (Cynthia) Dyson, Gerald (Jeanette) Dyson; nephew Bradley Dyson (Jennifer), niece Chelsea Dyson Hancock (Brian) and grand niece Audrey Dyson. His mother-and father-in-law, Lynn and Dorcas Dyson, also survive. His special Aunt Gail and Uncle Ed Walther of Mooresville also survive. Friends will be received in the vestibule at Western Avenue Baptist Church, Statesville, NC, on Thursday, March 27, from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. A celebration of life service will be held in the sanctuary of Western Avenue Baptist Church starting at 3:00 PM Thursday. A private family burial service will follow. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts would honor the life of Kelvin at the following: Samaritan's Purse, www.samaritan.org, P. O. The family would like to express their love and appreciation for all their friends at Moravian Falls Elementary School, Western Avenue Baptist Church, Hospice, Dr. Andy White, and friends from Curtiss Wright and Duke Energy, for their love, care, and support for Kelvin during his brief journey with the brain tumor that took his life.
