Mr. Joseph Patrick Hughes, Jr, 79, of Statesville, passed away Tuesday, June 5, 2018 at the Gordon Hospice House.



Joe was born on March 25, 1939 in Monongahela, PA and was the son of the late Joseph Patrick Hughes, Sr. and Kathryn Fyan Hughes.



Prior to his retirement, he was employed for 39 years with AC Nielson where he worked as a marketing supervisor.



Joe was a member of St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council # 10852 Charlotte.



Joe was a hard-working dedicated man. He loved the Lord, his family, his friends and anyone else that could talk sports with him! He attended high school in Monongahela, PA and graduated from Duquesne University. He was married to Irene Fetcko Hughes and together they raised four children until her death in 1998.



In addition to his parents and first wife, Joe was preceded in death by two sisters, Katherine LaFountain and Louise Hunter.



He is survived by Sylvia Lawrence Hughes and was the light of her life for 19 years. He is also survived by four children, Joseph Patrick Hughes, III (Jan) of Cumming, GA, Robert Hughes (Susan) of Andower, MA, Kevin Christopher Hughes of Dix Hill, NY and Kyra Peters (Chris) of Holly Springs, NC. He is also survived by his step-daughter, Donna Heatherly (Tim) of Stony Point and step-son Jonathan Hicks (Marissa) of Nutter Fort, WVA. He is further survived by 11 grandchildren, Rachel, Ryan, Jack, Michael, William, Patrick, and Benjamin Hughes, Bridget and Anna Peters, Samyra Somazzi and Lizzy Pennington, one sister, Ann Balderson (Bill) and several nieces and nephews.



A Mass celebrating the life of Joe Hughes will be conducted at 10:00 AM Saturday, June 9, 2018 at St. Philip The Apostle Catholic Church with Rev. Father Thomas Kessler officiating. The family will visit with friends Friday afternoon from 4:00 pm until 8:00 PM at Nicholson Funeral Home. Burial will follow at a later date at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Charlotte.



In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Matthew Knights of Columbus of Charlotte Council # 10852, 8015 Ballantyne Commons Pkwy. Charlotte, NC 28277.
