Joseph Blair Atwell

Joseph Blair Atwell, 61, of Harmony, passed away, Wednesday, December 5, 2018 at UNC Chapel Hill Hospital.



Mr. Atwell was born June 23, 1957 in Welch, WV and was the son of the late Miles Herbert Atwell and Rosetta Blair Shelton. He attended schools in Bradshaw, WV and was married to Brenda Lea Bailey Atwell. He retired as a coalminer with Alpha Natural Resources for over 30 years. He was a member of Johnnycake Church of the Living God in Iaeger, WV and he moved to Statesville in 2013, where he and Brenda joined Anchored in Christ Ministries. He lived and preached the Gospel and was an avid paraglider. He was "one blessed man".



In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Jolena Addair (Eddie George) of Statesville, a son, Billy Joseph Atwell (Tonya) of Statesville, five grandchildren, Shayla, Lindsey, Casey, Joey and Gabby, three brothers, Dillard Atwell (Barbara), John Atwell (Geneva), David Atwell and four sisters, Eunice Edgell, Jane Deskins, Emily Fultz and Loretta Payne (Odell).



He was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and Charles Atwell and a step-father, Woodrow Shelton.



Funeral services will be 2:00p.m. Saturday, December 8, 2018 at Nicholson Funeral Home with Pastor Ray Blankenship officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. Burial will be held in West Virginia at a later date.
