John Mitchell Gregory

John Mitchell Gregory, 81, of Statesville, died Tuesday night, March 27, 2018 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center following a period of declining health.



Born on August 26, 1936 in Statesville, North Carolina, John was the son of the late James and Mary Warren Gregory. He was a graduate of Statesville Senior High School and attended Mitchell College.



John was a member of Forest Park Presbyterian Church where he served on several committees including Congregational Emergency Relief Fund. He was also a Ruling Elder. John was self-employed as a realtor and was former owner of Statesville Hot Dog Stand. He was Past Master of Statesville Lodge 27, AF & AM and a member of the Oasis Shrine. John was also a member and past president of the Duck Creek Gun Club. He served as City Council representative of Ward 1 from December 6, 1982 to December 2, 1991 and from December 5, 2005 to December 2, 2013.



On June 30, 1956 he was married to Rebecca McKenzie, who survives. He and Becky had a son, John Mitchell, Jr. who died in 1979.



John is survived by a brother, Thomas Warren Gregory and wife Marilyn, a niece, Kimberly Elaine Moore (Jeff), three nephews, Thomas Warren Gregory, Jr., James Gregory III and Dan Gregory and one great niece, Kameron Leigh Moore. He was preceded in death by a brother, James Gregory, Jr. and a sister, Helen Gregory.



A private burial service will be held Saturday, March 31 at 2:00 p.m. at Oakwood Cemetery followed by a 3:00 p.m. memorial service at Forest Park Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends in the Sanctuary following the memorial service.
