John Josey

Mr. John Alan Josey, 69, of Statesville, passed away Thursday evening, December 23, 2010, at his home following a lengthy illness. John was born in Iredell County on May 9, 1941, and was the son of the late John O. Josey and Sally Rary Josey. He was a graduate of Statesville Senior High School Class of 1959, graduated from Mitchell College in 1961 where he was awarded the President's Award, and received his B.A. Degree from Lenior Rhyne College in Mathematics in 1963. He also was awarded the Math and English Awards from Lenior Rhyne College. While at Statesville High School and Mitchell College, John covered high school sports for his brother, Jerry Josey, on Friday nights. He also worked at Smithy's Department Store and Beauty Maid Mills. On October 29, 1966, he was married to Brenda Jo Williams Josey who died February 5, 1994. John was a member of Oakdale Baptist Church. John worked in Winston-Salem at MSA, in Atlanta, GA for American Software, and in Hickory, N.C. for Corning. He was a Program Analyst and worked with computers. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one brother, Jerry O. Josey, a brother-in-law, Wayne Everidge, a sister-in-law, Janet Williams, and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Richard and Ruth Elam Williams. John is survived by one son, Giles "Guy" Knox and wife Christa of Troutman, two grandsons, Sage and Ramsey Knox; two sisters, Janice Josey Everidge and Carole Josey Overcash, both of Statesville; one brother, Glenn Josey and wife Phyllis of Denver, CO. Also surviving are brothers-in-law David Williams and wife Debbie and Hiriam Williams both of Statesville; two sisters-in-law, Marie Steele and husband Hugh and Linda Knox of Winston-Salem, N.C.; his uncle and aunt, Robert and Mollie Rary and aunt Helen Josey Byers, both of Statesville. He is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Funeral services will be conducted 3:00 PM Tuesday, December 28, 2010, in the Nicholson Funeral Home Chapel with Hospice Chaplin Tom Corbell officiating. Burial will follow in the Oakwood Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Todd Lenderman, Jason Overcash, Frankie Steele, Dale Josey, Adam Sherrill, Sgt. Stan Josey, Mike Smith, Richard Smith, and Bucky Elliott. Honorary pallbearers will be his classmates from Statesville High School Class of 1959. The family will visit with friends on Tuesday at the funeral home from 2:00 until 3:00 PM.
