John Edward Horton

August 20, 1958 — January 14, 2021

Mr. John Edward Horton, 62, of Winston-Salem, NC passed away January 14, 2021 at his home surrounded by his loving family. The son of the late James Stafford and Alice Casper Horton, Mr. Horton is known for being committed, loyal, and reliable at home, at work and at play. John retired from the City of Winston-Salem after 30 years of service. He is a member of Kerwin Baptist Church where he was incredibly involved in the Upwards and Awana programs and coached soccer and basketball there. He loved spending time at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem where he served as Chief Steward. John was a basketball referee with the North Carolina High School Athletic Association for over 30 years, was a special referee for the Harlem Rockets, and refereed professional wrestling for 25 years. In addition to his parents, Mr. Horton is preceded in death by his sister Linda Hope Horton and his very special stepfather Frank Collison. He is survived by his wife of almost 25 years Pamela Wingfield Horton of the home, daughter Amber Payne of Winston-Salem, stepsons David Wakefield of Winston-Salem and Jesse (Annette) Wakefield of Winston-Salem, three grandchildren Andrew Payne, Scarlett Wakefield, and Angela Wakefield, brother Walter James Horton (Teresa) of Winston-Salem, step-sister Kay Bailey, and several nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life service will be at 2 pm, Sunday, January 24, 2021 at Kerwin Baptist Church, 4520 Old Hollow Road, Kernersville, NC 27284. The service will also be lived streamed at www.kerwinbaptistchurch.com and their FaceBook page.
