Jane Hawthorne

Jane Grier Hawthorne, age 100. passed away Wednesday May 9, 2018, in her own home following a lengthy illness She was the beloved wife of Herbert Columbus Hawthorne who predeceased her in 2000. They resided in Statesville, NC Since their marriage November 24, 1942. She was a resident of Galloway Ridge, Pittsboro, NC since 2007.







Mrs. Hawthorne is survived by her three daughters, Jane Grier (Kitty) Hawthorne Buck of Tuscon, AZ, Dr. Mary Herbert Hawthorne, Pittsboro, NC, Ann Parks Hawthorne of Burnsville, NC and Washington, DC; her grandson Shane Willoughby MacNicholas, his wife Della and son Parks Hawthorne, Charleston, SC. She is also survived by her sister Alice Grier Johnston of Charlotte, and Key Largo, FL Her sister Ann Grier Carmen predeceased her in 1994







Mrs. Hawthorne was born July 27, 1917, in Kannapolis NC, the first born of Katie Neal Cochran and Robert Davidson Grier. She was also the first grandchild of Rev. Dr. John McDill Grier and Columbia Ann Davidson Grier, and Rev. J.B. Cochran and Allie Walker Cochran. She graduated from Mitchell College, Statesville, NC and then from Woman's College of the University Of North Carolina in 1939 with a BS in Nutrition and Diet Therapy.







Mrs. Hawthorne was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Statesville and was the first woman Elder elected to the Session. She also held a lifetime membership in the Women of the Church.







As a member of the Board of Trustees of Mitchell Community College she served as chairman for several years and was instrumental in the formation of the Endowment for Excellence, a scholarship fund founded to honor her father's many contributions to the college. She was also a Member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America.







Mrs. Hawthorne was commemorated with a family prayer service in her home on Saturday, May12th led by Reverend J. William Crittenden. A family graveside service will be held at Elk Creek Cemetery, Sparta, NC.
