James Michael Leafe

March 10, 1949 — June 19, 2016

James Michael Leafe, age 67, passed away after a long illness on Sunday, June 19, at Roswell Rehabilitation & Nursing Center in Georgia. "Mike" Leafe was born on March 10, 1949 in Statesville, N.C. and baptized at St John's Lutheran Church. He was the son of Norman E. Leafe and Nell Gaither Leafe who preceded him in death. He is survived by his brother Norman E. Leafe, Jr. & his sister-in-law Dana Leafe of Marietta, GA plus 2 nieces - Tammi Leafe of Roswell, GA and Kimberly Leafe of Brooklyn, NY. Mike was devoted to his family. He was a loving son, brother, and uncle. Mike graduated from South Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte in 1967. He then attended UNC Chapel Hill and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry in 1971. Following graduation, Mike went to work for the State of North Carolina Health Department labs. After 32 years of public service he retired in 2004. Mike had an active retirement. He enjoyed traveling and visiting family and pursued his lifelong interest in photography and swing dancing. Being a UNC graduate, of course Mike was a college basketball fan. He followed the Tarheels across the country to 3 different NCAA Final Four tournaments. A graveside memorial service is planned for 11:00 AM Saturday, July 16th at Snow Creek United Methodist Church in Statesville, N.C. with Pastor Tom Corbell officiating. Nicholson Funeral Home in Statesville is handling the arrangements. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Snow Creek United Methodist Church, 401 Snow Creek Road, Statesville, N.C. 28625.
