James Thomas Poplin, 90, of Statesville, passed away Thursday, November 17, 2016 at the VA Hospital in Salisbury. He was born in Iredell County on May 21, 1926 to the late Charles Lee and Mabel Harbin Poplin. Mr. Poplin was a graduate of Statesville High School and served his country honorably during WWII in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He attended Mitchell College under the GI Bill. Jim worked at Langley Field as an airplane mechanic from 1951 to 1958 and at the missile plant in Charlotte. He retired from John Boyle and Son where he worked in the shipping department. Mr. Poplin was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Nancy Elliotte Poplin and Frances Poplin Ash; and one brother, Charles Richard Poplin. Left to cherish his memory are nephews and nieces, Ric Poplin (Donna), Todd Poplin, Buddy Ash, Elizabeth Ash, Delan White (Gina), and Michelle Baggarley (Randy);sister-in-law, Rebecca Poplin; great nieces and nephews, Amanda and Kristian Poplin, Chase and Leeann Poplin; and great great nieces, Charlie and Lennon. A Graveside Funeral Service with military honors provided by the Iredell County Veterans Council Burial Detail will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, November 19, 2016 at Oakwood Cemetery with Rev. Dr. J. B. Parker officiating. The family will visit with friends at Nicholson Funeral Home prior to the service from 1:30 until 2:45 pm.
