Mr. Jackie Darell Elliott, 78, of Statesville, passed away Saturday, April 5, 2014, at the Gordon Hospice House. Mr. Elliott was born December 5, 1935, in Iredell County and was the son of the late Richard P. and Johnsie Rumple Elliott. He attended Iredell County schools and he was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Elliott was married to Janice Thompson Elliott, who preceded him in death on January 29, 2010. He was a retired truck mechanic with C & C Trucking. Mr. Elliott was a member of Temple Baptist Church in Statesville and he was a member of the VFW Post 2031. In addition to his parents and his wife, Mr. Elliott was preceded in death by two sons, Terry "Turkey" Shoemaker and Scott Elliott along with one granddaughter, Alisha Shoemaker. He is survived by one son, Kent Shoemaker (Terry) of Byron, GA, one daughter, Maleia E. Plyler (Roger) of Statesville; three grandsons, Stephen Shoemaker of Byron, GA, Bradley Turner of Taylorsville, and Joshua Shoemaker of Statesville along with two granddaughters, Kim Van Etten (Skip) of Byron, GA and Amanda Norris (Shane) of Clayton, NC. He is further survived by one sister, Betty Jo Starnes of Hiddenite and one brother, Larry Elliott (Linda) of Tallahassee, FL along with two great-grandsons, Tommy Van Etten of Byron, GA and Jacob Elliott of Clayton, NC and one great-granddaughter, Delaney Van Etten of Byron, GA. His dog, special friend and constant companion, Sampson along with his "buddy" John Heinen also survive. Funeral services for Mr. Elliott will be conducted 2:00 PM Wednesday, April 9, 2014, at Temple Baptist Church with Pastor Randall Mitchell officiating. Burial with full military honors provided by the Iredell County Veterans Burial Detail will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 until 7:30 pm at Nicholson Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Temple Baptist Church, 205 Museum Road, Statesville, NC 28625 or to Gordon Hospice House, 2341 Simonton Road, Statesville, NC 28625.
