Helen Louise Gibson

August 21, 1923 — March 17, 2018

Mrs. Helen Louise Weston Gibson, 94, of Statesville, died Saturday morning at Iredell Memorial Hospital. Born in Iredell County on August 21, 1923, she was a daughter of the late Oren Wesley Weston and Esther Cross Weston.

She married the love of her life, Harold Gibson in 1945. They were married for 44 years. Helen was a lifetime member of South River Baptist Church and a member of the Dan McGee Adult Sunday School Class. Over the years she served as church treasurer, was on the pulpit and cemetery committees, and taught Sunday school and helped with Bible school. She loved to sing and was an alto in the Mitchell College and church choirs.

Helen was a nurse at Davis Hospital working for many years in the operating room. Family and neighbors would come to her for medical advice. After retiring Helen devoted her life to caring for her mother-in-law, parents, husband and other family members. Her home was always open to friends and family.

She was also an avid reader. She read her Bible every day. At the time of her death she had read it through in it's entirety 10 times. Her other hobbies included feeding and watching her birds and sitting on her porch.

She was preceded in death by brothers Carlyle Weston and Gilbert Weston and a sister, Elizabeth Rumple.

Survivors include sons, Hal Gibson (Cindy) and Harry Gibson (Candy), both of Statesville, a daughter, Hilda Cook (Alton) of Whitsett, N.C., five grandchildren: Lisa Bateman (Lenny), Leslie Nix (Kevin), Jonathan Cook, Katie Nash (Chesley) and Crystal Gibson along with 7 great grandchildren. She is also survived by a special care giver and best friend, Jeanette Conley. The family wishes to extend thanks to Dr. Hrko, Dr. Perez and the staff of the Critical Care unit of Iredell Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services are scheduled for 3:00 P.M. Monday at South River Baptist Church with Dr. Chris Thompson and Rev. Robert Livingston officiating. The family will greet friends in the church sanctuary from 1:00 until 3:00 prior to the service and burial will follow in the church cemetery.
