Hampton "Bud" Pearson Wansley

January 27, 1931 — July 31, 2016

Mr. H.P. "Bud" Wansley died at the Gordon Hospice House, surrounded by his family, on July 31, 2016 at 11:18am. He was 85 years old. Mr. Wansley was born January 27, 1931 in Richmond, VA, the son of the late Hoke Smith Wansley and Minnie Harper Wansley. He was a graduate of E.C. Glass High School, Lynchburg, VA, Lynchburg College and the University of Virginia. He coached football and boxing at The Miller School of Albemarle, Charlottesville, VA and football and basketball at Aiken High School, Aiken, SC. He sent many players on to the college and pro ranks. Many of his former players became coaches in high schools, colleges and the pro ranks. In retirement, he recruited football for The University of Virginia, He was a Mason, Scottish Riter, and Shriner. He was a member of "The Sons of the American Revolution" being a direct descendant of John Wansley, Revolutionary War Soldier. Over a lifetime, he was President of Baler Equipment Co., Trailer Rental Corp. and Lignum Vitae Export Co., Tegucigalpa, Honduras. He was employed by the Atomic Energy Commission as a health inspector in extremely high radioactive locations. He worked for Pullman Standard Car Compnay and retired as District Manager of Fruehauf Trailer Co., Memphis, TN. He served his beloved Episcopal Church in various parts of the country as Senior Warden and Treasurer. In retirement, he served on the Energy Foundation Board and was a member of the prestigious organization in Statesville, known as "The Brain Trust". Mr. Wansley was a lifetime member of Phi Delta Kappa and The Gideons. A selfless provider to others, he took more solace in giving than receiving. He loved his family, his work, friends, nature, sports, and living each day in appreciation of blessings great and small. He leaves his beloved wife, Linda, who was his great companion and love. He was preceded in death by his brother, Fred Wansley. He leaves two sons, Mark Wansley and wife, Candice of Greenville, SC and Thomas Kent Wansley and his wife, Amber of Statesville. One daughter, Sarah Kilpatrick and husband, Bill of Jacksonville, FL. He leaves four grandchildren, Alex and Noah Wansley of Statesville, Emily Hairfield and Ashley Strange of Charleston, SC and two great grandchildren, Taylor and Hudson Strange. Funeral services will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Wilkesboro, NC on Thursday, August 4, 2016 at 5:00p.m. with visitation at the Parish House at 4:00 p.m. before the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
