H. Cowles Bristol, Jr.

Henry Cowles Bristol, Jr. (Cokie) passed away, Sunday, March 5, 2017 at the home of his daughter, Margaret Collier, after a brief illness which was complicated by Alzheimer's. Born in Statesville, December 15, 1926, he was the son of the late H. Cowles and Margaret Brawley Bristol, Sr. On October 18,1952, he married Peggy Nan Brawley who preceded him in death. He is survived by four children, H. Cowles (Cokie) Bristol, III (Missy), Margaret B. Collier, Leslie B. Robinson (Tom), and Mary B. Thomas (Brian); nine grandchildren are Christopher (Beth), Jonathan (Brenna), and Benton Bristol; Drew and Avery Robinson; Rock and Bristol Marie Collier; and Badin and Macy Thomas who loved spending precious time with their Grandy at his office, his home, and the duck pond. Mr. Bristol loved and cherished Allison's Woods, a sanctuary for him to visit, taking his family and friends to go frolicking through the leaves to find the hidden patio. Cowles graduated from Statesville Senior High and was an Eagle Scout and Order of the Palms. He attended Catawba College where he played football. He entered the Army Air Force during WWII on July 3, 1945 and served on Guam and Mariana Islands, serving as Captain. After this tour of duty, he attended UNC-Chapel Hill and upon graduation, he entered a second tour of duty as an officer, serving at RF Manston Air Force Base in England. Cowles' career began with Prudential Insurance Agency, then he joined Penn Mutual LIfe Insurance Company, and launched Bristol Financial Planning and Consultants. His professional organizations included The American Society of Life Underwriters/Charter Financial Consultants; The Charlotte Association of Life Underwriters; The International Association for Financial Planning, The Practitioner's Division Council and The Charlotte Estate Planning Council. He was licensed with the North Carolina and South Carolina Insurance Departments as a Continuing Education Instructor, serving as an instructor for Central Piedmont Community College. Cowles was a faithful member of Broad Street United Methodist Church, serving as a Sunday school teacher for the youth and the Men's Bible Class. His strong Christian faith led many family, friends and strangers to Christ. He was generous to those in need, often offering food, transportation and shelter. He served on the Board for The Cup of Water. The family appreciates daughter, Margaret Collier for providing loving home for their father in his recent years. The family would also like to thank all the caregivers, especially Anita Chipley, for the loving care they provided for our Dad. A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 10 at Broad Street United Methodist at 2:30 pm. The family will visit with friends in the fellowship hall following the service. There will be a private family burial with military honors at Oakwood Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Iredell County or Broad Street United Methodist Church.
