Mrs. Gwendolen "Gwen" Gemmell Deaton, wife of Fred Hyams Deaton, Jr of Statesville passed away on the evening of 26 March 2015. She had been in declining health for several years. She was the daughter of Juanita Roller Gemmell & Thomas Melville Gemmell who preceded her in death. Gwendolen was also preceded in death by her sister Anita "Nita" Gemmell Allison, the wife of Thomas Ausley Allison of Statesville. She was a graduate of VA High School & attended Sullins College & University of Alabama. Following her marriage to Fred Hyams Deaton Jr, who survives her, she was a homemaker & mother to three children. Two sons, Frederick Sherrill Deaton (Barrie) of Winston Salem, NC & Robert White Deaton (Gaither) of Charlotte, NC. Mrs. Deaton is also survived by her daughter, Margaret MacGregor Deaton of Blowing Rock, NC & Cary, NC She is additionally survived by three grandsons Thomas Deaton of Wilmington, NC & Robert (Rob) & James (Jimmy) Deaton of Charlotte, NC Mrs. Deaton served on the Advisory Board of the North Carolina Society of New York. She served as a board member of the NC Museum of History & represented Iredell County. She was also a board member of the Roanoke Island Historical Association. Mrs. Deaton was a member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America. The Colonial Dames are invited to sit together for the service. A graveside service will be held at 11:30 AM on Monday, March 30 at Oakwood Cemetery. Memorial services will follow at 1:30 PM at First Presbyterian Church where Mrs. Deaton taught Bible Study Fellowship for many years. Visitation will take place in the Fellowship Hall following the service. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to First Presbyterian Church, 125 North Meeting Street, Statesville, NC 28677 or Deaton Sherrill Scholarship at Davidson College C/o Davidson College, Box 7173, Davidson, NC 28035-7173 or to the charity of the donor's choice. The family would like to thank everyone for their love & support at this time. We would especially like to thank the staff of Bermuda Village healthcare Center.
