G.W. Williams

Mr. G. W. Williams, 80, of Union Grove, NC, passed away Friday, June 27, 2014, at Iredell Memorial Hospital. Mr. Williams was born on September 8, 1933, in Iredell County and was the son of the late Stamey Coit Williams and Julia Barker Williams. He was a graduate of Union Grove High School and on November 14, 1953, he married the former Ruth Brotherton, who survives. Mr. Williams was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served from 1955 until 1957. He was a member of New Prospect Baptist Church. He retired from Southern Screw following 33 years of services where he worked in quality control. He was a man who enjoyed hunting, farming, and gardening but he especially enjoyed sharing his watermelons. Along with his parents, he was also preceded in death by a son, Barry Joe Williams, a sister, Mae Williams Davis and three half brothers, Bobby L, Cecil R. and Charles Starling. In addition to his wife of 60 years, Ruth Williams, he is also survived by a brother-in-law, Homer Davis of Olin, niece, Paula Trivette McConnell of Statesville, and a sister-in-law, Irene Starling of Statesville. He is further survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Mr. Williams will be conducted 11:00 AM Monday, June 30, 2014, at New Prospect Baptist Church with Rev. Joey Campbell officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will visit with friends Sunday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 pm at Nicholson Funeral Home. Active pallbearers will be Bobby Starling, Lynn McConnell, Terry Ball, Jerry Ball, Tim Coffey, and Myers Shumaker. Memorials may be given to New Hope Community Center, c/o Lacy Shumaker, 301 Taylor Springs Road, Union Grove, NC 28689, or to New Prospect Baptist Church, 509 Prospect Road, Statesville, NC 28625.
