Glenn Eugene Mayes

Glenn Eugene Mayes, 91, of Statesville, passed away Wednesday, July 29, 2015 at his residence. He was born February 3, 1924 in Iredell County and was the son of the late William Claude Mayes and Margaret Estelle Cornelius Mayes. Mr. Mayes was a graduate of Cool Springs High School, attended Mitchell College, and received his AB Degree from Lenoir Rhyne College. He also did graduate studies at Appalachian and Duke Universities. He served his country honorably in the U.S. Army from 1945 until 1947. He taught in public education for 30 years in Iredell and Gaston County, and for 16 years, in Wake County before retiring. He also enjoyed farming. He was a long time member of New Salem United Methodist Church where had been a Sunday school teacher and was member of the United Methodist Men as well as served on the administrative board. He was a founding member of the Cool Springs Fire Department where he served as Chief and also as Chairman of the Board of Directors for many years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, J. Burette Mayes, W. Elmer Mayes, and Raymond D. Mayes; and two sisters, Gladys M. Walker and Marie M. Bell. On March 28, 1964, he was married to Mabel Blackwelder Mayes, who survives; along with a brother, Ross W. Mayes (Agnes); and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Mr. Mayes will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, August 2, 2015, at New Salem United Methodist Church with Rev. David Gay officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the church cemetery. The family will visit with friends following the services or at home at any time. Active pallbearers will be Joe Mayes, Henry Walker, Harry Mayes, David Mayes, Stephen Mayes, and Wayne Mayes. The family would like to express their appreciation to Stanley Klein, Scott Bowers, and Doris James for their loving care of Mr. Mayes. Memorials may be made to New Salem United Methodist Church, 155 New Salem Road, Statesville, NC 28625.
