Mrs. Gay Nell Reavis Cartner, 91, of Statesville, died Thursday, September 8, 2016 at the Gordon Hospice House. Born in Iredell County on July 2, 1925, she was a daughter of the late Cyrus Bruce Reavis and Maude Johnson Reavis. On December 26, 1945 she married Mr. William Ray Cartner, Jr. who died in 1997. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, LeRoy Reavis in 1986 and a sister-in-law, Rachel Norton Reavis in 2013, along with six other sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law. Mrs. Cartner was a member of Harmony Baptist Church where she served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and choir member. She graduated from Harmony High School and Received her B.A. from Catawba College and her Masters Degree from Appalachian State University. She taught at Harmony School and retired from there after 36 years in 1983. Her greatest pleasures were church, reading and watching her grandson play basketball at North Iredell High School and her two great grandchildren. Survivors include a daughter, Mary Gay Cartner Ford (Jerry) of Statesville, a grandson, William Chadwick Ford (Jacqui) of Statesville and great grandchildren: Brooklyn and Landon Ford. Also surviving are sisters-in-law: Jo Cartner Sees (John) and Tommye Cartner Campbell (Henry). Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, September 13, 2016 at Nicholson Funeral Home with Chaplain Sharon Snow and Chaplain Lynn Lepley officiating. Private family burial will be in the Harmony Cemetery. Mrs. Cartner will lie in state from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. Tuesday prior to the service. Condolences may be sent online to the family to www.nicholsonfunerals.com.
