Frederick "Fred" Lee Shoaf

Frederick Lee Shoaf, 84, of Troutman, passed away Thursday, October 12, 2017 at the Gordon Hospice House. He was born in Davie County on November 2, 1932 to the late Walter and Bessie Nail Shoaf. Fred was a graduate of Cooleemee High School and Appalachian State University where he played football and baseball for four years. On August 19, 1956, he married Joan Spillman Shoaf who preceded him in death in 1994. He started his career as a school teacher at Troutman High School and coached football, basketball, and baseball. He later worked as Plant Manager at Troutman Industries and finished his career at Burlington Industries in Mooresville. Fred was a member of Western Avenue Baptist Church. He was an incredible father and grandfather who made life fun for everyone. The times spent with him will always be cherished. Fred always could make anyone laugh and impeccably demonstrated what the best kind of true love should look like. Along with his parents and wife, Joan, he was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister. Left to cherish his memory are a son, John Shoaf (Cindy); a daughter, Betty Jo S. McLelland (Rusty); five grandchildren, Chelsea McLelland, J. Mclelland, Jamie Watt (Thomas), Lindsey Shoaf, and John Ross Shoaf; two great grandsons, Brody Watt and Bentley Musick; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Sunday, October 15, 2017 at Western Avenue Baptist Church. The family will visit with friends following the service. A private family burial will be held Monday, October 16, 2017 at Iredell Memorial Gardens Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Equipping With Truth Ministries, 119 W. Broad Street, Statesville, N.C. 28677 or Hospice and Palliative Care of Iredell, 2347 Simonton Road, Statesville, N.C. 28625.
