Emily Reid Huie passed away at home April 23, 2016. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Horace Huie; three children - Pam (Gerald) Campbell, Phil (Janet Williams) Huie, and Dora Huie; three grandchildren - Eliza (Jason) Kiser, Leah (Mike) Painter, and Sarah (Jonathan) Williams; four great-grandchildren - Bailey Wolfe, Laurette Kiser, Adisyn Painter, and Emily Williams; one sister - Sylvia (Dennis) Pipkin; special relatives Clay Reid and Nita Saunders; sisters-in-law Charlotte Redmond, Luecree Nicholson, and Janet Huie ; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents - Spencer and Jessie Reid and two sisters - Myrl Kennerly and Pattye Montgomery. She was born July 9, 1934 in Union Grove to Spencer and Jessie Mullis Reid. She and her sisters would remain the closest of friends for their entire lives. On February 10, 1957, she and Horace were married. Together, they raised three children - Pam, Phil, and Dora. She had a special gift for caring for babies and children, and she was dearly loved by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. As her children got older, she was a Cub Scout Den Mother and a Sunday School teacher. While her children were growing up, she took pride in keeping a neat and tidy house, and her children enjoyed telling her in adulthood about the time Dora brought a calf into the house during a storm while she was working! She retired from the US Postal Service in 1996 after 22 years as a rural letter carrier in the Harmony Post Office. Prior to that, she worked at MacLean Trucking in Winston Salem and A&H Stained Glass in Harmony. She continued working in stained glass as a hobby for many years. Emily and Horace enjoyed raising gardens together. Summers always found her freezing and canning the abundance of their garden and making jelly from the gallons of blackberries Horace would pick for her. The children were known to banter over the years over who would eventually inherit the blackberry-stained jelly spoon! Emily was a lifelong member of Winthrop Friends Meeting. She had an unwavering faith in God and a devotion to her relationship with her Savior. She was active in her church as long as she was able. Outside of her church, her faith manifested itself in the way she treated others. The many years she spent volunteering for Meals on Wheels were just one expression of her faith. Her last year was a difficult one, but she was cared for with tireless devotion at home by Horace, Pam, Phil, Bonnie Mitchell - who was a blessing to Emily and her family, and the wonderful staff at Hospice. Funeral services will be held at Winthrop Friends Meeting on Tuesday, April 26th at 12 noon, preceded by visitation from 10:30 am - 12 noon. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Gerald Campbell, Jonathan Williams, Jason Kiser, Mike Painter, Lyden Williams, Allen Baggarly, and Alec Grant. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Winthrop Friends Meeting, 262 Winthrop Road, Harmony, NC 28634 or Hospice and Palliative Care of Iredell County, 2347 Simonton Road, Statesville, NC 28625.
