Dwight "Smitty" Smith

Mr. Dwight Moody "Smitty" Smith, Jr, 66, of Statesville, passed away Friday, June 27, 2014, at the Gordon Hospice House following a courageous battle with bone cancer which was associated with prostate cancer. Mr. Smith was born in Binghamton, NY on February 17, 1948, and was the son of the late Dwight Moody Smith, Sr. and Beverly Joan Florance Smith. He was a graduate of LaSalle Senior High School in Niagara Falls, NY and was married to Peggy Donaldson Smith, who survives. Mr. Smith served in the U.S. Air Force and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He was self employed as an auto mechanic and was a member of New Amity ARP Church. In addition to his wife, Peggy, Mr. Smith is also survived by one daughter, Yvonne Smith Farnham (Gary), one granddaughter, Megan Rose Farnham, and a step-grandson, Clint Farnham and his daughters, Miley and Peyton, all of New York. He is also survived by three sisters, Jackie Ames (Tom), of Stafford, VA, Jill Fleming (Grant) of Manassas, VA, and Debbie Curran (Rev. Keith) of Suffolk, VA along with a number of nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his beloved Doberman dogs, Sarah and Jethro as well as his cats Greaser and Flash. Funeral services for Mr. Smith will be conducted at 3:00 PM Monday, June 30, 2014, at New Amity ARP Church with Rev. Chris Parnell officiating. Burial with full military honors provided by the Iredell County Veterans Burial Detail will follow in the church cemetery. The family will visit with friends from 2:00 until 3:00 PM at the church. Active pallbearers will be Rodney Warricks, Tyler Keipper, Steven Intravaia, Todd Donaldson, Eric Bell, and Terry Hope. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Gordon Hospice House, 2341 Simonton Road, Statesville, NC 28625, or to veteran's organizations of the donor's choice, or to New Amity ARP Church, 150 Logan New Amity Rd, Statesville, NC 28625.
