Dwight Everette Harmon

Dwight Everette Harmon, 93 loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend passed away on Wednesday, December 7, 2016 at Gordon Hospice House in Statesville, N.C. He was happily married for 65 years to Texie McLelland Harmon who preceded him in death in 2009. Twins Dwight and Marshall Harmon were born September 25, 1923 to Everette L. and Maude Howard Harmon in Iredell County. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by brothers Marshall and Forrest Harmon, sister Frances Harmon Whitley, and infant son Bradley Harmon. Blessed by his life are his sister Aileen Harmon Daniels of Statesville and daughters Sheila Harmon Ammons (John) of Statesville and Joan Harmon Lewis (Earl) of Kernersville. Providing him countless hours of joy are his grandchildren Amy, Brian, Tim, Sarah, Katie and their spouses plus great grandchildren Aaron, Wesley, Carter, Dalton, and Lizzie. Though not usually a boastful man, when given the opportunity, he loved sharing his grandchildren's endeavors with others. Also blessed by his memory are his nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, and adjunct family members from The Children's Home, especially Peggy Greer Gabriel. Left to hear stories about their great grandfather who they were unable to meet in person are Blessing, Iyanu, and Testimony from Egbe, Nigeria. Mr. Harmon was a WWII veteran serving as a staff sergeant in the US Army 817th Ordnance Company stationed in both England and France. He was a graduate of Harmony High School, Mitchell College, and Lenoir Rhyne College. He spent 33 years serving as a dedicated teacher and administrator at The Children's Home in Winston-Salem. He was a longtime member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem. He will be remembered with love and affection through the lives he touched and the example he set for others. Following internment at Friendship United Methodist Church in Statesville, a service celebrating Mr. Harmon's life will be held on Monday, December 12 at 2:00 at Nicholson Funeral Home, 135 E. Front Street, Statesville, N.C. with The Reverend Jan P. Heermans officiating. The family will receive visitors prior to the service beginning at 1:00. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Children's Home, 1001 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104 or to SIM USA, missionary account #042310 (web.simusa.org) to support Katie and Nick Riddles' work in Egbe, Nigeria.
