Dr. Ralph Hamilton passed away on Wednesday November 20, 2013. He was born on July 3, 1924 in Russellville AL, son of the late James and Lucy Hamilton. He had 11 older siblings, all of whom preceded him in death. Ralph served in World War 11 in the infantry where he fought in the Battle of the Bulge. After the war he attended Auburn University where he received his degree in Veterinary Medicine. He worked for the North Carolina Department of Agriculture with Animal and Disease Control in livestock for over 35 years. Ralph was affectionately known as "Doc" Hamilton to anyone who owned cattle and horses in the 12 surrounding counties. After moving to Statesville in 1951, Ralph met and married the love of his life Margaret Batte, who survives. He is also survived by three adoring daughters and sons in law- Beth and Fred Gianakouros, Pat and Burford Cherry, and Sarah and Joe Tomlin; seven grandchildren- Melissa Webster, Meg Gianakouros, Elizabeth Alexander, Katherine Cherry, Mark Tomlin, Matthew Tomlin, and Emily Tomlin; and one great granddaughter Sophia Webster. Ralph and Margaret were charter members at Forest Park Presbyterian Church since 1960 where Ralph served as Sunday School Superintendent, Deacon, and Elder. He was an active member until recently and was known for his sense of humor and big appetite! After retirement and well into his eighties Ralph and Margaret could be seen walking hand in hand all over town. They became somewhat of a symbol to many who saw them of love and devotion. Ralph will be honored at a private family burial. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 o'clock Friday, Nov. 22, at Forest Park Presbyterian Church, Statesville with Rev. Scott Jeffreys officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 o'clock to 2 o'clock prior to the service. Memorials may be made to Forest Park Presbyterian Church or The Alzheimer's Association. Online condolences can be made to the family at www.nicholsonfunerals.com/obituaries and Nicholson Funeral Home is serving the family of Ralph Hamilton.
