Dortha Octavia Chuber

March 14, 1925 — December 11, 2017

Mrs. Dortha Octavia Cole Chuber, 92, formerly of Statesville, and more recently of Salisbury, died Monday at Trinity Oaks in Salisbury. She was born in Canton, North Carolina on March 14, 1925 to the late Crom Edgar and Mae McCrary Cole. Dortha graduated from Canton High School in May of 1942 and attended Cecil's Business College in Asheville where she graduated in July of 1944. Dortha met the late William (Bill) Chuber in Asheville where she worked for the Army as a civilian. Bill had just returned from World War II where he was a prisoner of war for 13 months in Germany. Once Bill returned to the states, he was headed to Boston for rehabilitation, but boarded the wrong train and ended up in Asheville medical center for rehabilitation and recovery from being a prisoner. Dortha and Bill met in 1945 and then married on June 8, 1946. Dortha and Bill had a great marriage of 63 years until Bill's death on March 8, 2009. Dortha served as a former President of: The Junior Service League, The Woman's Civic Club, the YMCA at N.C. State and the A.D. Rutherford PTA. She was a former Woman of the year for the Junior Service League. Dortha and Bill had three children: David Chuber (Teresa), Ann Chuber Hoffman and James Chuber (Leigh). Additionally, she had six grandchildren: William, Andrew and Kathryn Chuber from David, Darya and Nicholas Hoffman from Ann, and Michael Chuber from James. Dortha had great-grandchildren: Jack and George Chuber from William Chuber and Logan Tyla Stanley of Daryl Hoffman Stanley. Dortha is also survived by a brother, Max Cole and his wife, Faye, of Knoxville, TN.. Dortha and Bill spent most of their marriage in Statesville, N.C. where they owned and Dortha managed two Kentucky Fried Chicken Franchises for many years. Dortha and Bill sold the franchises in 1980 when they both retired. She loved cooking, traveling and spending time at the beach after her retirement. She loved to read and spend time with her family and friends at Trinity Oaks. In 2014 Dortha Chuber became the face of Our Mom's Best, a business started by her daughter, making Dortha's recipes of pepper jellies, relishes, mustard and pesto. Funeral services are scheduled for 3:00 P.M. Saturday, December 16, 2017 at the Nicholson Funeral Home with Rev. Mark Conforti officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. The family will greet friends Friday evening at Nicholson Funeral Home from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. and again on Saturday for one hour prior to the service.
