Dorothy Gantt Smith

Mrs. Dorothy Gantt Smith, 98, of Statesville, passed away Saturday, August 20, 2016 a Iredell Memorial Hospital. Born in Iredell County on August 14, 1918, she was a daughter of the late George Blake Gantt and Maude Herman Gantt. She was a graduate of Celeste Henkel High School and H. F. Long Hospital School Of Nursing. A registered Nurse all of her career, she did private duty nursing for many years in the Statesville area. She was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church.

She was married on December 8, 1939 to Robert Graham Smith who preceded her in death in 1984. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Tami Denise Smith, a brother, Edwin H. Gantt and a sister, Frieda Gantt Ellis.

Survivors include a son, Robert Wayne Smith and his wife, Norma, of Corpus Christi, Texas, a granddaughter, Gina Nicole Smith of Athens, Ga. Two nephews, John Ellis, II. And Timothy Edwin Ellis and his wife Sandy, and one niece, Rhonda Beatrice May and her husband, Wayne. Also surviving are two great nieces, Emerald Christine May and Ashley Diane Ellis and one great nephew, John Ellis, III.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 :00 Saturday at Nicholson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Cowles Bristol officiating. The family will speak with friends for one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Iredell Memorial Gardens.
